OBITURARY COPIED FROM KEY WEST CITIZEN
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1944
(ORIGINAL COPY OF PAPER IN DEATH RECORDS FILE)
"ANNOUNCE DEATH OF R.E. HAMILTON
RESIDED IN KEY WEST 12 YEARS; ATTAINED AGE OF 110 YEARS
R.E. Hamilton, who, when 104 years of age jigged to demonstrate he was not too old to work on the WPA at the time it was operating in Key West, died when he was 110 years and 11 months, according to a clipping The Citizen received from the Souther Jesuit. Mr. Hamilton came to Key West from the Ten Thousand Islands and resided here 12 years. He was sprightly long after he had passed the century mark. He walked rapidly and could be seen frequently along the shore of the Garrison Bight attending to his boat.
"You think I'm too old," he replied, when his advanced age was mentioned at he time he applied for a WPA job, "look at this," and he jigged to show how agile he was. Those who saw him remarked that he was "able to fling a leg" as nimbly as though he had been a youth.
The notice of his death in the Southern Jesuit reads:
The director was recently notified of the death of R.E. Hamilton, who we believe was the eldest member of the Jesuit Seminary Fund Association. Mr. Hamilton died last June at the ripe old age of 110 years and 11 months. He became a member when the Fund was formed in 1933 and very faithfully each year renewed his membership. The Director would like others to follow his noble example. Mr. Hamilton formerly resided in Key West, but recently moved to Albuquerque, N.M."

( The article states that R.E. Hamilton died at the age of 110 years and 11 months, in June. Richard Hamilton's 1902 deposition states his birth date as July 26,1840. If he died in June 1944, this would put his age at time of death 104 years and 11 months. Despite the accolades in this obit Richard was not the most honest man alive, still the correlation of the months leads me to believe that this our Richard Hamilton. At his advanced age and the dubious means of recording births in the 1800's it is quite possible that Richard was forced to guess at the year of his birth, which means he was quite capable of changing that year now and then, give or take a few years. The birth month seems to be consistent in all other documents.)
COPIED FROM ARTICLE IN FT. MYER'S PRESS
29 JUNE 1899
"The notorious outlaw and negro desparado, Richard Hamilton, after 16 or 17 years of scouting, has at last been captured by Deputy Sheriff Edgar J. Watson, of Monroe county, the capture being made at Cape Sable on the --- day of June. Hamilton is a notorious tough, and has sworn dozens of times that no man living could arrest him. Hamilton some time ago got into a fracas with Frank Hamilton, a white man, and a Mr. Weeks, and cut them both severely, and because an old woman interceded for the two men, Hamiltn knocked her down with a stick and cursed her shamefully and threatened to cut her throat. When Watson arrested him he was on his boat. The deputy sheriff told him he wanted him and had a warrant for him. Hamilton made a dive for his gun in the cabin, but Watson shoved a 45 Colts in his countenance and ordered him to hands up, which order he promptly obeyed. The noted gentleman is now boarding at the Island City Hotel, at the same time looking through the bars. It is the opinion of every one that Hamilton will go to the phosohate mines for his health. Sheriff Knight has certainly made a good and wise selection when he appointed Mr. Watson his deputy.'
( The man Weeks mentioned is probably John Weeks, Richard's father in law. It is not certain if Frank Hamilton is related, I don't think so. The old woman is impossible to know, possibly Richard's mother, Peggy?)
